Japanese Agricultural Shoiko Backpack

A Meiji period ‘shoiko’ backpack, originally used by agricultural workers to assist in the carrying of heavy items in rural areas too steep or difficult for carts to navigate. Constructed from whittled timber and woven hemp fibre. A deeply patinated utilitarian piece sold for its decorative merit, to be hung as a piece of wall art. Japanese, c. 1900.
