Meiji period Jizai Kagi
A Meiji period ‘jizai kagi’ or hearth hook, formed from a single organically shaped piece of keyaki wood, patinated by heat and smoke. Commonplace in traditional homes, the jizai kagi was suspended from an architectural beam over an ‘irori’ or sunken hearth, from which an iron tea kettle would be hung. Japanese, c. 1900.
