Large Yellow Glazed Conscience Vessel

A large and heavily patinated 19th century yellow glazed terracotta ‘conscience’ vessel with six loop handles. French, c. 1850.

In the 15th century, monks went from house to house requesting olive oil for the poor. They collected this in jars with a rope attached through the handles, carried by donkey or mule. Each individual donated an amount of oil, according to their conscience - giving birth to the name of this type of jar.
