Late 19th Century Orkney Chair

An excellent example of a late 19th century Orkney chair in natural pine, oat straw and sisal twine. A beautifully patinated vernacular piece originating from the Orkney archipelago, off the northwestern coast of Scotland. A craft dating back hundreds of years and varying from maker-to-maker - the chair was designed low to the ground to avoid smoke from the open fires, with the winged straw back providing warmth and shelter from the wild island weather. Scottish, c. 1870.
