Ochre Conscience Vessel Lamp

A large early 20th century patinated ochre glazed terracotta ‘conscience’ vessel with six loop handles, mounted as a lamp. French, c. 1900. Supplied with an off-white dupion silk shade.

In the 15th century, monks went from house to house requesting olive oil for the poor. They collected this in jars with a rope attached through the handles, carried by donkey or mule. Each individual donated an amount of oil, according to their conscience - giving birth to the name of this type of jar.
