Pair of Large Conscience Vessel Lamps

A near pair of large 19th century partially glazed and patinated terracotta ‘conscience’ vessels, mounted as lamps. French, c. 1870. Supplied with off-white calico shades.

In the 15th century, monks went from house to house requesting olive oil for the poor. They collected this in jars with a rope attached through the handles, carried by donkey or mule. Each individual donated an amount of oil, according to their conscience - giving birth to the name of this type of jar.
